Posted by admin on September 9th, 2009 and filed under livelihood | No Comments »

The Government of Japan has provided US$311,814 (approximately Rs. 36 million) for the Support for Livelihood of Returnees in Batticaloa District (Phase 2) to be implemented by JEN, a Japanese humanitarian NGO, under the Japan-NGO Cooperation Grant scheme.
The project contributes to construct 40 agro-wells, provide 40 water pumps, and to conduct workshops to strengthen communities in the 8 Grama Niladhari Divisions of Kiran and Chenkalady District Secretary division in Batticaloa. It is envisaged that the project provides stable water supply, ensures livelihood and food security, and improves income of 1,000 people.

The project is the forth phase of the Livelihood Project for Returnees in Batticaloa that JEN has implemented since 2007 through the Japan-NGO cooperation Grant scheme as well as the Japan Platform (JPF), an umbrella organization for conducting emergency humanitarian istance outside Japan under the partnership among the Japanese Government, NGOs, private sector, and economic sector. JEN also has been supporting the Emergency Water Supply for the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North, utilizing Rs. 60 million through the JPF. In addition to JEN, six Japanese Humanitarian NGOs, namely, Save the Children Japan (SCJ), Japan Agency for Development and Emergency (JADE), World Vision Japan, Japan Center for Conflict Prevention (JCCP), PARC Inter-Peoples Cooperation (PARCIC), and Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) are providing emergency support for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North through JPF. These supports show the strong relationship between Sri Lanka and Japan not only at the governmental level but also at the grass-roots level.

The Grant Contract was singed between His Excellency, Mr. Kunio Takahashi, Ambassador of Japan and Mr. Shu Nishimaru, Head of Colombo Main Office of JEN, on 8th September 2009 at the Embassy of Japan in Colombo.

Isha Foundation - Tsunami Relief & Rehabilitation

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 and filed under livelihood project | 4 Comments »

“We must understand what the disaster is. A huge wave is not the disaster. The disaster is human. People who lost their family, that’s the disaster. Somebody lost his livelihood; somebody lost his home; that’s the disaster. Somebody doesn’t have something to eat tonight; that’s the disaster. So, this disaster is not just on the physical plane. A human being’s suffering is hugely within himself, more than outside. A few packets of food may arrive, and he may get to eat; however, the new conditions - that he has to sit on the street side and eat, not in his home, and that his family has disappeared - that is the real disaster, the human part of it.” - Sadhguru

    Tsunami Relief & Rehabilitation
Isha Foundation which already operated centers in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu was quick in its response to the unprecedented and catastrophic death and destruction caused by the tsunami on 26th December, 2004. In coastal areas of Chidambaram and Cuddalore and the devastated villages in Vellankovil and Nagapattanam, thousands of Isha volunteers from all walks of life tirelessly operated relief camps from the very first day, offering food, shelter, quality medical istance and psychological relief to the victims. Specially designed Isha Yoga classes were also conducted to help those affected cope with the disaster, through physically and psychologically strengthening tools.

Personally participating in the relief and rehabilitation programs, Sadhguru made several visits to the affected areas — closely directing and overseeing the process. Eight Mobile Health Clinics complete with their medical teams, supplies and thousands of volunteers were immediately moved from their project sites to the coast and put at the disposal of the district administration.

Subsequently, in close working with the district administration, Isha Foundation adopted four villages in Cuddalore district and completed a model rehabilitation program that was highly acclaimed by the beneficiary communities and the state administration alike. In addition, Mobile Health Clinics were permanently dedicated to implementing the project Action for Rural Rejuvenation in 60 coastal villages.

Isha Foundation delivered its first permanent house to the victims within 30 days of the disaster. The novel housing design developed promptly by Sadhguru himself, was certified as fire, earthquake, cyclone and tsunami proof by various institutions. Further, a boat manufacturing facility was set up on the premises of Isha Yoga Center to respond to the urgent need for fishing boats (the sole livelihood provider of coastal villagers). Volunteer engineers and professionals isted to restore livelihoods lost through the calamity.

A massive tree planting program and creation of a green belt through Project Green Hands was also undertaken and is ongoing in coastal villages affected by the tsunami.

Djembe - Making a Djembe - Ghana, West Africa

Posted by admin on August 13th, 2009 and filed under sustainable livelihood | 14 Comments »

This is a video collection of “Classic Djembes” and “Drum Circle Djembes” being hand crafted in Ghana, Africa by the Africa Heartwood Project.
Description of the Africa Heartwood Project:
Drums with heart. Drums that make a difference. Drums that were and are part of something living, dynamic, eternal. Each Heartwood djembe is a symbol of hope and sacrifice and partnership. In a market based economy where the imperative is to maximize profit at any cost, Africa Heartwood Project is using the free market as a humanitarian tool to generate sustainable livelihoods for hard-working artisans in West Africa who otherwise would not have access to markets large enough to provide for their families. With a long-term commitment to individual drum and instrument builders, AHP has given hundreds of hours of skills training and business mentorship, helped extend micro-loans and donated funds valuing thousands of dollars to purchase tools, buy land, build workshops, and purchase raw materials, and has helped to established solid distribution channels that will ensure that the artisans can count on income next month, next year, and through to the next generation. African Heartwood Project labors on behalf of the entrepreneurial artisans to keep their hands busy, bellies full, and hope alive.

Wetlands supporting livelihoods in Malawi and Zambia

Posted by admin on July 24th, 2009 and filed under livelihoods | No Comments »

A film by Wetlands International that shows the importance of wise use of dambos (seasonally flooded grasslands) in Central Southern Africa, for the communities that live around them.

In the last two decades, periodic droughts in Zambia and Malawi have rapidly increased, causing alarming seasonal food and fresh water shortages resulting in increased health and economic vulnerability during the dry seasons.

For many people in Zambia and Malawi the only way to survive these periods is by using the dambos for agriculture providing enough for local consumption and surplus for the market.

The film shows a project that Wetlands International started in 2006 in the Mpika wetlands in Zambia and the Simlemba wetlands in Malawi to support the people in the dambos.
