  • Maybe the Hokey Poke IS what it’s all about…

Posted by admin on August 25th, 2009 and filed under livelihood projects | No Comments »

This video was taken in the small village of Mahandekini in southern Kenya, not far from the foot of Killimanjaro. As part of our satellite camp project with Global Vision International (GVI) we spent a week with a few communities who had joined forces and turned, as they put it, “from poachers to protectors”. We were camped by one of the schools and these nursery students joined us one morning during breakfast. This is the 2nd video of them – where we try to teach them the Hokey Pokey (listen for their giggles at the end!). The 1st video is of them performing Head-Shoulders-Knees etc They were shy but eager to share – so cute! These villages had given up poaching wildlife and were looking for sustainable alternative livelihoods. Partnered with the World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) they were taking impressive steps towards these goals. We joined the work to help them create and develop an educational and cultural center for locals and tourists, to continue their monitoring of Human Wildlife Conflict, to support their development of alternative livelihood projects (recycled paper, bee keeping, soap making etc) and to help plant new neem trees in their village – amongst other things! Again, to know more about what GVI Kenya is currently up to, go visit: www.gvikenya.blogspot.com or www.gvikenya.wildlifedirect.org

One of our projects located in Kamuli district, Uganda. Selected ISU students and faculty work in cross-culture teams with counterparts at Makerere University school children learn about agriculture, health, nutrition, and sanitation. The hands-on curriculum facilitates working together to grow bananas, sweet potatoes, cassava, maize, fruits, and vegetables. Harvested food is used to enhance the nutritional and caloric value of the school lunches. Working together with Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns (VEDCO) and Makerere University, the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods is making a difference in world hunger. This program is able to continue thanks to generous contributions. If you are interested in learning more about our programs, please, visit us at http://www.srl.ag.iastate.edu/. Disasters are a development concern (module 3)

Posted by admin on July 11th, 2009 and filed under livelihood development | No Comments »

Frequently disasters are seen as extreme hazard events, which are beyond our control. This film seeks to demonstrate that rather than simply hazard driven, disasters are the result of vulnerabilities and failures in development accumulated over many years, such as unsafe conditions, dynamic pressures and socio-economic and political systems. The film is aimed at development practitioners, politicians and donors and argues that disasters are a development concern and asks for risk reduction to be mainstreamed into development planning.
