Founded in 2003 by IowaStates College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) empowers people in developing countries to improve their quality of life in ways that can be sustained long-term. Presently, CSRL is directly isting small scale farmer households in Kamuli, one of the poorer districts in Uganda. The goal is to help farmers achieve food and nutrition security and then diversified and secure incomes. Measurable impact in the lives of thousands of people ociated with the program stems primarily from collaboration with two key Ugandan organizations that employ participatory methods to understand the people and their communities history and culture: Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns (VEDCO) and MakerereUniversity. The intent is to remain in Uganda until sustainability is ured, then replicate the successful model in other developing countries or regions. We are able to fund these programs thanks to generous contributions and gifts. If you would be interested in learning more about our work in Uganda please visit us at http://www.srl.ag.iastate.edu/ for more information. Building New Livelihoods In A Conflict Zone Using ICTs

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under livelihoods | 2 Comments »

Life in northern Uganda implies living within what essentially amounts to genocide. Since 1987, the Lords Resistance Army has been engaging in activities to overthrow the Ugandan government, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of their brutal tactics, often via the forced kidnapping and recruitment of child soldiers. This piece documents how one organization, Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) has been training those released from captivity to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) to rebuild their livelihoods.
