  • Land Reforms – Namibia

Posted by admin on September 15th, 2009 and filed under livelihood strategies | 25 Comments »

    January 2004
The introduction of sweeping land reforms in Namibia is threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of white farmers. Emmanuel Ismael’s home is a small farm in the heart of Duerreland, Namibia. Yet he fears that all might soon be lost in the face of President Sam Nujoma’s land reclamation programme. With black farmers desperate for land, the Namibian government has adopted a strategy designed to win them votes — evicting white farmers. 192 foreigners have already lost their farms. But European farmers are worried that only the politicians will profit from the changes. “They are not battling against poverty but are simply changing the colour of the skin of the owners.” In fact, the first victims of the land expropriation will be the black workers. Farmers believe that foreign investment is the real key to agricultural development.

      Well DaSlug32′s …
Well DaSlug32′s comments are not helping fix the image of the colonial racist. As a white Namibian I find them insulting myself. I am proud to have grown up besides people of all colours and I truly feel that the younger generations will do Namibia proud.

    2. GaijinGDB Says:

      Well, I just think …
Well, I just think if land reform does happen, it must not be fueled by anger and retribution. Set a limit on the size of farm land (no one needs 400 square kilometers plus, I admit) and make sure it is farmed by those who will use it properly.

    5. DaSlug32 Says:

      Talking about …
Talking about sealed fates. Ever wonder why HIV is so prevalent in Africa? Perhaps somebody decided that fighting wars, and bribery were getting tiresome; something more subtle was required….just messing with you….youtube is so much fun.

    6. 007insurgency Says:

say all you wish to …
say all you wish to say indian man. But it will be your blood, and YOUR CHILDRENS BLOOD. there will be no talking. your insults wont change what is comming. Fate is sealed.

    7. DaSlug32 Says:

      Africans can’t …
Africans can’t decide, they can only herd cattle, steal and kill. Minning and other egineering tasks are better left to the educated and skilled Europeans and Asians. That way the land is put to greater use. PS: do not use a condom – it is a white conspiracy to stop you breeding.

    8. 007insurgency Says:

      Africans will …
Africans will decide what they FEEL like doing wih THEIR land! We will defend our dignity by any cost. Even if we have to spil YOUR BLOOD!

    9. tigerone1970 Says:

      Just so we know …
Just so we know what we are talking about. The average white farmer owned 2,500 hectares of land, and used only 500 ha to grow tobacco. This kept 70% of Zimbabwe’s arable land out of food production.

Now if they were smart, not racist, and not obsessed with maintaining their social position by keeping Africans down, they would create a farm every 1km2 and collect a small amount of rent. They would be rich – but of course, that would improve the incomes of the African population, so…

    10. tigerone1970 Says:

      Now considering …
Now considering that most Afrikaners are mixed race, I wouldn’t say they did that badly, with the entire state supporting them and their businesses.

      And neither will Africans. :)

    11. tigerone1970 Says:

      If you derive your …
If you derive your idenity from holding back the progress of the African majority, how African are you again?

It is not enough to identify with land, or say ‘This is my country’, but not identify with the people. And how are you going to do that, if you believe in the superiority of your ‘race’, and the inferiority of anyone else’s ‘race’?

This is what I mean that I am tired of this ‘White African’ and ‘A Tribe Apart’ garbage.

    12. tigerone1970 Says:

      ” they don’t call …
” they don’t call themselves Dutch they call themselves African. ”

Actually, they call themselves African (Afrikaners) and call the real Africans “Kaffirs”, after the arabic word Khafur or ‘non-believer’.

      That’s how ‘African’ they are.

If you don’t identify with the African people, how African are you, exactly?

If you derive your identity from exploiting African people instead of working with them, how African are you?

    13. DaSlug32 Says:

      Sorry, but the …
Sorry, but the Chinese and Indian economies require the raw materials to produce for the world economy. If Africa is not going to do any thing useful with it – bribery, theft or war will be required eg:Iraq/oil. Comply or Die.

    14. bevniel Says:

      You are stupid, …
You are stupid, Congo just allocated 10 000 mil hectare to white farmers of South Africa. Go look it up on the internet. It’s real my friend. There is actually black people out there that is clever enough to see that their own people can not do the job.

    15. bevniel Says:

      you are the people …
you are the people that has kids with your sister and still live with your mother and and 25 other people in a 1 bedroom house and your poor mother has to look after you and your kids and your sisters kids and ect ect. Lazy Lazy Lazy people.

    16. bevniel Says:

I am sure he will …
I am sure he will tell it to your face but I am afraid they will arrest him for being a racist. I am sure you will get away with it because your black……shame!

    17. bevniel Says:

      Racist. You only …
Racist. You only think of today and not the future…you do not want to share and only think as far as your nose.

    18. 007insurgency Says:

      qualified …
qualified proffesionals? well the can take their qualifications to europe and use them there! U talking about the work force, so you are applying the injustices of black people reduced to slaves and surfs in their own land must be ignored because namib will lose part of its work force!!? NONSENSE! namibia needs to lose part of its work force if that whats needed to gain proseprity and justice for many the blacks! we demand this!!!

    19. 007insurgency Says:

If u had an “IQ” …
If u had an “IQ” you would not be making such ridiculous statments. You thnk an african country will starve unless it has commercial European farmers sitting on all the fertile land? NONSENSE! the issue here is justice, the land should be in the hands of the african people. Those farmers dont feed the nation! try study commercial farming and find out how it really works! u think like a 2 year old!

    20. 007insurgency Says:

      black peope have …
black peope have the land back? you are missing the point. your bigoted subconcious mind fails to see the reality of the matter. We demand AFrican lands in african hands NOW. what blacks do with the land is really none of your business!! Europe is the place where whites should feel at home to to do as they please. NOT AFRICA!africa doesn’t need to be lectured by outsiders about what the solutions for its problems are! If blood has to be shed to send a message to these unwelcomed guests so be it

    21. 007insurgency Says:

      myfriend.that ” …
myfriend.that “foriegn investment” that you speak about is simply bribe miney these westerners use to manipulate situations in order to maintain their positions as the largest stakeholders in a countries economy. The dont serve the purpose of isting true economic and social developement of the local people. So try again buddy. The answer is AFRICAN INDEPENDENCE NOT TO LIVE AS SLAVES FOR FORIEGNERS WITH THEIR FAKE CHARITY AND INVESTMENTS WHICH HAVE STRINGS TIED TO THEM! thats no ideal thats fact

    22. GaijinGDB Says:

      And how have …
And how have sanctions not ruined Zimbabwe? You tend to forget that most investment is foreign, regardless of you liking that fact or not. If disease and starvation don’t indicate ruin, then what? Ideals and reality don’t always mix.

    23. GaijinGDB Says:

      What will land …
What will land repatriation achieve? A few more votes for SWAPO? I have friends in SWAPO, young blacks from my generation who see education and cooperation among the younger generations, regardless of race, as the only way forward. No one is denying the crimes of the colonial era or asking for forgiveness (nor is everyone white ignorant, tigerone1970), but playing tit-for-tat will do nothing but hurt the country as it has Zimbabwe. You who create divide hurt your country more than you help it.

    24. GaijinGDB Says:

      Well, regardless , …
Well, regardless , keeping a chip on your shoulder isn’t going to get the country anywhere. No one is denying what happened, Shark Island etc., but you, by uming every ‘white’ thinks the same makes you as ignorant as the colonialists. I went to a school that was majority African, and spoke openly about such issues with my black friends, but this won’t solve current issues. So don’t you dare accuse me of ignorance for you seem to hold ideas as backward as any. Hatred never gets you anywhere.

    25. tigerone1970 Says:

      Don’t you DARE …
      Don’t you DARE demand forgiveness.

Let alone without returning the land to the people of Namibia.
