The Livelihoods Network held our 3rd Annual Workshop on the 12th -15th November 2007 at Harborne Hall in Birmingham (U.K.). The overall aim of workshop was to continue peer support and knowledge-sharing on the application and relevance of Sustainable Livelihoods Approaches (SLA) to current development issues. This video documentation from the workshop was created so that those who weren’t able to attend can get some feel for the atmosphere and creativity of the event and its participants. We hope this will stimulate further interest in the Network and even more participants at the next event! More information on the workshop can be found in the workshop report and the workshop blog. Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha was founded in 1998 to help poor, marginalised communities living in the remote Chalanbeel region of Bangladesh to develop sustainable livelihoods. Shidhulai has achieved this by building up a fleet of flat-bottomed boats, all made with locally available materials, that make their way through the shallow rivers and canals of the Chalanbeel to bring a range of educational services and renewable energy supplies to water-side families. The boats use solar PV modules to generate all the electricity they need to provide daily classes in primary education for children, libraries, training in sustainable agriculture, health advice, mobile phone and internet access and battery-charging facilities. Shidhulai has also provided villagers with 13,500 solar-home-systems, 2,500 lanterns and 15,000 bicycle pumps that deliver between 60 and 100 litres of water per minute – enough to irrigate half a hectare of land during the dry season. By putting into practice the agricultural techniques they have learnt on the boats and using the renewable energy devices, farmers have been able to significantly increase their income and reduce the use of synthetic pesticides, with about one third of farmers eliminating their use altogether.

This is a video collection of “Classic Djembes” and “Drum Circle Djembes” being hand crafted in Ghana, Africa by the Africa Heartwood Project.
Description of the Africa Heartwood Project:
Drums with heart. Drums that make a difference. Drums that were and are part of something living, dynamic, eternal. Each Heartwood djembe is a symbol of hope and sacrifice and partnership. In a market based economy where the imperative is to maximize profit at any cost, Africa Heartwood Project is using the free market as a humanitarian tool to generate sustainable livelihoods for hard-working artisans in West Africa who otherwise would not have access to markets large enough to provide for their families. With a long-term commitment to individual drum and instrument builders, AHP has given hundreds of hours of skills training and business mentorship, helped extend micro-loans and donated funds valuing thousands of dollars to purchase tools, buy land, build workshops, and purchase raw materials, and has helped to established solid distribution channels that will ensure that the artisans can count on income next month, next year, and through to the next generation. African Heartwood Project labors on behalf of the entrepreneurial artisans to keep their hands busy, bellies full, and hope alive.
