Not passing the course to earn a degree, and that, to earn a livelihood. Not at shopping and not at running engineering projects.
Put another way, how the knowledge of mathematics will help to transform our lives at personal level ?
Bertrand Russel has the point in THE CONQUEST OF HAPPINESS: ‘In adolescence, I hated life and was continually on the verge of suicide, from which, however, I was restrained by the desire to know more mathematics. Now, on the contrary, I enjoy life; I might almost say that with every year that passes I enjoy it more.’
I am not sure that I can answer that; an answer would imply that I know how to infuse others with the same love of mathematics I have. I think it is something you either have or don’t have. I think Russel’s quote would have the same weight if he had substituted any area of study for mathematics. It is the love of learning, and of acquiring knowledge which (to me) is important. I learned from a very wise man, however, that knowledge in and of itself is not enough. Anything you know only has value when you give it away; that is, when you can teach another.
My husband works long hours to support us and I really appreciate that he works so I can finish my Masters. I graduate in May. We had an unexpected pregnancy (I have a condition that causes infertility, but is regulated by birth control, and even with all the odds against having a baby, it happened…..even when having been told by 3 different doctors that I was infertile AND being on birth control). So I decided to focus my efforts on becoming successful instead of being a mother. Our son is 5 months old and everything has changed. Tonight I needed to study, have 2 projects and an essay due tomorrow. My husband came home from work, played video games (we are 33 years old), and fell asleep. I told him while he was starting his video game that I needed a lot of help tonight. He said, "Sure." I think that was an automatic response, you know what I am talking about women, when the man doesn’t really hear you but makes you think he did. I have been trying to type and study all night with a baby on my lap (son is EXTREMELY high maintenance for a baby…..always has to be entertained or have a change of scenery). Husband finally came upstairs to find me in tears because I have to have this stuff done by tomorrow or my grade gets docked a huge percentage. This is my last semester of my masters, and have a high paying job waiting for me upon graduation, though we are struggling to make ends meet at the moment. He saw me in tears and told me he didn’t want to hear my crying….he was too tired to care for our son….and he cannot stay up late to help because he is solely responsible for our livelihood and has to sleep so he can work and we can eat. I guess I feel like what I am doing is unimportant to him, even though it is in his benefit to help, as my job would more than triple our household income. Is this his stress? Is it abnormal for me to think I deserve more help???
I also just asked for help, and he did take our son. Only for me to hear him yelling "Shut the F up" to our 5 month old. At which point I closed my laptop and retrieved our son from his fathers care.
"So I decided to focus my efforts on becoming successful instead of being a mother." When I stated this in the previous paragraph, I was referring to my focus when I realized being a mother my not ever happen to me. Being a mother is my number 1 focus at the moment, school is 2nd. However, that does not mean that I have to quit school, that is not an option at this point.
That is not normal sounds like he’s having trouble dealing with having a child and supporting both of you and he’s taking it out on you and the baby. Him helling at the baby to shut the f up is call domestic abuse you and the baby don’t deserve that sounds like he only cares about his self. Maybe he needs a couple day break I’d would go to a family members house for a few days and if that don’t change then it might be best if you separate for the best of that baby so he doesn’t get abuse. I’m so sorry for the way he is treating you and the baby I really hope you guys can work through this. I’ve been there I know how it feels when they treat you like that. Good luck to you and your baby.

What’s this design concept for? Is it a school project? A investment proposal? You barely mentioned anything for us to help you.
Though there are some very stiff grammar, I won’t change your sentences, but I’ll make slight grammatical corrections:

1 – Okay the ending is too abrupt, it’s like you got cut off from something, you need to fix that.
2 – Confusing repetitions of "concentrated" is inappropriate to describe a lively place.
3 – General grammatical errors everywhere.
4 – Too many "the"s, which make the entire thing unnatural and stiff.
5 – Don’t take the passive tone, dictating what you have done. If you want to propose something you need to soften your tone to "I will", don’t give the impression you’re arrogant.

You are tribal and poor villagers living in the Narmada Valley in India.Since the 80′s State and Federal Governments have been implementing a huge project "development to construct several dams along Narmada Valley to generate hydro- electricity. The dams have and will continue to displace hundreds of thousands of indigenous people and poor communities from their land. Governmental promises to provide housing and livelihood for displaces villager have often stop the Narmada project has grown. the movement employs non- violent ( ahimsa) strategies including rallies , hunger strike refusing to leave villagers being flooded by raising waters.
QUESTION:
1) From you faith perspective, suggest strategies that support the worldview that "ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE"
2) Discuss "AHIMSA"
3) if you were in the shoes of the villagers , being ( community leader) or an( ordinary citizen) what will you do to resolve conflict?
5) what was the federal gov’t doing to resolve the conflict?
Ahimsa is a term meaning to do no harm (literally: the avoidance of violence – himsa). It is an important tenet of the Indian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism and especially Jainism). Ahimsa is a rule of conduct that bars the killing or injuring of living beings. It is closely connected with the notion that all kinds of violence entail negative karmic consequences. The extent to which the principle of non-violence can or should be applied to different life forms is controversial between various authorities, movements and currents within the three religions and has been a matter of debate for thousands of years. Though the origins of the concept of ahimsa are unknown, the earliest references to ahimsa are found in the texts of historical Vedic religion, dated to 8th century BCE. Here, ahimsa initially relates to "non-injury" without a moral connotation, but later to non-violence to animals and then, to all beings. Though ritual sacrifice of animals and meat-eating are condoned in the earliest Vedic texts, other texts present counter-arguments against these activities. In the 19th and 20th centuries, prominent figures of Indian spirituality such as Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharishi, Swami Sivananda and A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada emphasized the importance of ahimsa. Mahatma Gandhi applied ahimsa to politics, by his non-violent satyagrahas.
Ahimsa in Jainism emphasizes vegetarianism and bans hunting and ritual sacrifice. Jains go out of their way so as not to hurt even small insects and other minuscule animals and make considerable efforts not to injure plants in everyday life as far as possible. In accordance to this policy, eating of some foods, whose cultivation harms small insects and worms as well as agriculture itself, is to be abstained from. Violence in self-defense, criminal law, and war are accepted by Hindus and Jains. Though ahimsa is not used as a technical term in Buddhism unlike the other two religions, it condemns ritual sacrifice and violence, and moral codes emphasize the importance of not taking life.
—————— Non-human life
Hindus do not substantially differentiate the soul within a human body from that of an animal. Hence ahimsa as a binding code of conduct implies a ban on hunting, butchery, meat eating, and the use of animal products provided by violent means. The question of moral duties towards animals and of negative Karma incurred from violence against them is discussed in detail in some Hindu scriptures and religious lawbooks.
Some source texts discuss meat eating as a fact without referring to the ethical side of the issue. The Dharmasutra law books written around the 5th or 4th century BCE contain regulations for meat eating and lists of edible animals.[9] Medical treatises of the Ayurveda discuss and recommend meat from a purely health-related viewpoint without even mentioning the aspect of ahimsa. Examples are the Sushruta Samhita written in the 3rd or 4th century CE, which recommends beef for certain patients and for pregnant women, and the Charaka Samhita which describes meat as superior to all other kinds of food for convalescents.
Several highly authoritative scriptures bar violence against domestic animals except in the case of ritual sacrifice. This view is clearly expressed in the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana (11.5.13-14), and the Chandogya Upanishad (8.15.1). It is also reflected in the Manu Smriti (5.27-44), a particularly renowned traditional Hindu lawbook (Dharmaśāstra). These texts strongly condemn the slaughter of animals and meat eating. The Mahabharata permits hunting by warriors (Kshatriyas), but opposes it in the case of hermits who must be strictly non-violent. This view has, for the most part, been changed, and now almost all Hindu temples ban meat from temple premises.
Nevertheless the sources show that this compromise between supporters of ahimsa and meat eaters was shaky and hotly disputed. Even the loopholes – ritual slaughter and hunting – were challenged by advocates of ahimsa. The Mahabharata and the Manu Smriti (5.27-55) contain lengthy discussions about the legitimacy of ritual slaughter. In the Mahabharata both sides present various arguments to substantiate their viewpoints. Moreover, a hunter defends his profession in a long discourse. Most of the arguments proposed in favour of non-violence to animals refer to rewards it entails before or after death and to horrible karmic consequences of violence. In particular, it is pointed out that he who deliberately kills an animal will on his part be eaten by an animal in a future existence due to karmic retribution. Ahimsa is described as a prerequisite for acquiring supernatural faculties, highest bliss and ultimate salvation;] moreover it is said to protect against all kinds of dangers. The Manu Smriti (10.63), Kautilya’s Arthashastra (1.3.13) and the Vasishtha Dharmasutra (4.4) point out that ahimsa is a duty for all the four classes (Varnas) of society. The texts declare that ahimsa should be extended to all forms of life. They also give attention to the protection of plants. The Manu Smriti prohibits wanton destruction of both wild and cultivated plants (11.145). Hermits (Sannyasins) had to live on a fruitarian diet so as to avoid the destruction of plants.
Under these circumstances the defenders of hunting and ritual slaughter had to deny the violent nature of these activities. They asserted that lawful violence is in fact non-violence; according to them sacrificial killing is not killing, but is meant for the welfare of the whole world. They also suggested that such killing is in fact a benevolent act, because the slaughtered animal will attain a high rebirth in the cycle of reincarnation. Moreover they argued that some species have been created for the purpose of being sacrificed and eaten by humans, that it is normal for animals to kill and eat other animals, that agriculture, too, inevitably leads to the death of many animals, that plants are living beings as well and must still be destroyed, that we unintentionally and unknowingly destroy life forms all the time, and that a hunted animal has a fair chance to survive by killing the hunter.
Quotes from Manusmriti
Anumantaa vishasitaa nihantaa krayavikrayee Samskartaa chopahartaa cha khadakashcheti ghaatakaah- Manusmrithi 5.51 “Those who permit slaying of animals; those who bring animals for slaughter; those who slaughter; those who sell meat; those who purchase meat; those who prepare dish out of it; those who serve that meat and those who eat are all murderers“.
Quotes from Mahabharatha
Mahabharat, Shantiparva 265.9.4 "Suraa Matsyaa Pashormaasam Aasavam Krisharoudanam Dhurtaih Prvartitam Yajne Naitad Vedeshu Vidyate Avyavasthitamaryaadaeh Vimudhairnaastikaeh Naraeh Sanshayaatmabhiravyaktaih Hinsaa Samanuvarnitaa" Meaning:_ “Alcohol-drinking, Fish, Meat eating, aasava consumption – these are not present in Vedas. These have been propagated by fraud people. They have fraudulently added these uncontrolled, reckless, atheist descriptions in our texts. Further Mahabharata states "Mansaharinah Kuto Daya" – How can you expect compassion from a meat-eater!
Quotes from Ramayana
Saint Valmiki was going to the river Ganga for his daily ablutions. A disciple by the name Bharadwaja was carrying his clothes. On the way, they came across the Tamasa Stream. Looking at the stream, Valmiki said to his disciple, "Look, how clear is this water, like the mind of a good man! I will bathe here today." When he was looking for a suitable place to step into the stream, he heard the sweet chirping of birds. Looking up, he saw two birds flying together. Valmiki felt very pleased on seeing the happy bird couple. Suddenly, one of the birds fell down, hit by an arrow; it was the male bird. Seeing the wounded one, its mate screamed in agony. Valmiki’s heart melted at this pitiful sight. He looked around to find out who had shot the bird. He saw a hunter with a bow and arrows, nearby. Valmiki became very angry. His lips opened and he uttered the following words:You will find no rest for the long years of Eternity, For you killed a bird in love and unsuspecting.

Conflict is that the government is building dams and the people who live there are afraid of getting flooded.
The government is solving the conflict by giving the poor villagers housing and land.
this is for a project in Technology and Livelihood Education. we need to make a miniature model of a restaurant (or a cafe or a bakeshop or any place that is focused on selling food.
the place itself is gonna have to look good, because we can’t have mini waiters and cooks around serving food in a novel way, and neither will a menu be presented. so the design and layout should have aesthetic appeal and it has to be really simple to do. we have like a couple of days left and we don’t have ideas yet and no materials. Speculations and conspiracy (or otherwise) theories about the origins of the cattle mutilations are abound. For a brief background info, take a look at the following:
http://aliens.monstrous.com/cattle_mutilations.htm#theories
My point being: IF this is an ET-related phenomena AND the government/military/the intelligence community is/are somehow in cahoots with them, then why would the ET’s need to hit the small farmers’ and civilians’ herds, when they could have easily had access to the government’s own [huge] stock of cattle???
Or do you think this is a worldwide government conspiracy and a mere smokescreen, SOMEHOW??? IF so HOW???? … Or perhaps the ET’s are looking for a larger bovine DNA and hemoglobin / sampling cross-section??? [even so, I'd imagine the government could have easily provided them with the desired sampling cross-section]
Either way, the FACTS remain:
Animals (especially cattle) are being mutilated, and in almost every case, not only the CAUSE of death remains unknown, but the same organs (i.e. eyes, tongues, anus) are being removed with surgical precision [not to mention, the animal's blood drained completely and without leaving any trace].
Chances are this is NOT (except for perhaps a few isolated, but not proven, cases) the work of Satanic cults (it doesn’t have their MO, not to mention offering STOLEN sacrificed animal parts would probably have equated with an insult and hence offended whomever they worship).
Which may narrow the field down to:
1) The farmers themselves [extremely unlikely, since their very livelihood depends on their stock]
2) ET’s W/O the government/military involvement (the possibility must be considered, if only for the sake of argument)
and
3) A Prank Cattle/Animal Mutilation Club of sorts that gets a kick out of messing with people’s minds. [The problem there is after decades of killings and thousands of animals mutilated, worldwide, not a single person has ever been identified or brought to justice!]
So again my point being: IF it’s an ET-related phenomena then it’s also a strong evidence that the government and the ET’s are most likely NOT working together on other projects (joint technology developments etc.) either. … Unless, of course, you claim that the cattle mutilations is the smokescreen!
Your thoughtful opinions are greatly appreciated.
Aside/P.S./FYI/BTW: As a die hard steak lover, it is my personal interest to defend the rights of the cattle. Whoever is doing this, PLEASE (pretty PLEASE) leave my future steaks alone, would you! lol
.
Destined makes a good point here, and a gives a theory that would seem more plausible in explaining this mystery in a non-alien, human-rational way, BUT, I have a question about that.
Why would cattle farmers or whoever take the time and risk getting caught and media blitzed to put the dead cattle back, if they were taken away in the first place, why would they not just destroy and dispose of the diseased cattle, therefore eliminating any possibility of the fearful public getting wind of a possible situation and accompanying panic that, in his model, would cause catastrophe on a global scale? Would there be, over these 30 years, some worldwide secret organization of cattle farmer//forensic pathologist/CIA-like cover up artists at work here? Wouldn’t they have done that with mad cow disease? I know, only a theory, and a frightening one at that.
Now, back to the aliens. What if there are other dimensions of time and space? And what if those that dwell in another, who wouldn’t have to travel millions of miles but just step thru an aperture into our time and place, what if they discovered us and are visiting to sample and study us (taking into account all unexplained oddities and disappearances) before returning with their booty to their own kind? What if this has been going on for millions of years, and there is just no documentation of it? Maybe that is where the majority of dinosaurs went… The what ifs abound!
Considering the fundamental mechanism that all animals have and what we call panic, imagine what might occur if it was discovered that there are, indeed, aliens, and if those aliens are here with us, right now, only a dimension away or within us – and visiting to run their biological experiments for whatever reason… Personally, and as a former germaphobe, knowing that would be the equivalent of being surrounded, no, enveloped by a virus such as HIV, having to walk with it near to me everyday, all day and night – I could not survive that fear. Imagine our world if billions of humans stopped their normal daily functioning out of fear that all shadows contained cognizant beings, and that those beings were interested in taking us apart for study, for fun, maybe even for worship! We are gods – I knew it all along. ;D
Admittedly, Destined’s suggestion that things are not always what they seem, and that fear is a great weapon is all too true. We cannot allow panic to spread. Our massive and powerful governments cannot afford it and sustain themselves at their present level of wealth and comfort. THEY NEED TO CONTROL. Containing any alternate theories, other than the unbelievable "aliens from outer space" is their only option. The Men in Black know, of course, but look what happened to them – their all-important job has been reduced to a mere comedy, a spoof, and as such, is very easily dismissed by the general public. You do know that Hollywood is a secret NWO government agency, right? lol
I am finished now. Thank you for a fun and fascinating question – I’m going now to make me another tinfoil bodysuit/burqua.

Okay so i’ve got a kenmore sewing machine. i was working with denim, with a special denim needle. it bent, so i replaced it with an identical needle. now all of a sudden, the needle thread keeps snapping after only a few stitches. i went through the troubleshooting section of my manual, and addressed each possible reason for this happening: i know the machine is threaded properly, so it isn’t that, the tension can’t be too tight because it’s exactly the same as before (and lowering it did nothing to help), i know i inserted the needle correctly, etc etc etc. i even tried changing the thread to a thicker, stronger one and it did nothing. i am at a loss here. has anyone had a similar problem? is this something i can fix myself or should i just go get it serviced? i am hesitant to do that, because for one thing my warranty may be up… and for the other thing, i have projects that must be finished asap. this is my livelihood! =( i have never had this problem before, and any advice would be appreciated.
Try one thing again for me anyhow: take ALL the thread off the machine, top and bobbin, and then stretch a piece of pantyhose nylon or smooth lining fabric over your finger and feel along each thing the top thread goes through on its path — you’re looking for burrs. Also feel the presser foot and the needle plate hole. If you find a sharp ding, you can buff it off gently with some crocus cloth.
Then give the machine a good cleaning and oiling (if required) per the manual, set the tension back to 4, and rethread from scratch. Try a test sewing again.
Still breaking? Replace the needle. The eye may be sharp, even though it’s new.
Check the bobbin, bobbin case and sewing hook.
Are you holding the top and bobbin thread tails as you start to stitch?
The usual causes of a breaking top thread, in my experience, are
– missing the thread takeup lever
– other misthreading
– needle in backwards
– jackrabbit starts
– thread catching on something, including the thread spool notch for "keeping" the thread
– burr on the thread path
– burr on the presser foot
– burr on the needleplate
– burr on the sewing hook
– crummy thread (black and dark green are particularly prone to "issues") (spool off a few feet and look at it closely)
– thread diameter more than 60% of the needle eye width
When all else fails, put the sewing machine next to you on the computer table, and let it see that you’re searching Sears.com and overstock.com and similar for a new sewing machine. <g>
Dr. James McCarthy is a professor of biological oceanography at Harvard. Dr. Lisa Graumlich is the dean of the College of the Environment at the University of Washington. Dr. Chris Field is the director of the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science. Dr. James Hurrell is a senior scientist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
These four scientists testified at a recent House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming hearing, “The Foundation of Climate Science.” They also wrote an article published in Politico. Some excerpts:
"Today, a large body of evidence has been collected to support the broad scientific understanding that global climate warming, as evident these last few decades, is unprecedented for the past 1000 years — and this change is due to human activities.
This conclusion is based on decades of rigorous research by thousands of scientists and endorsed by all of the world’s major national science academies.
The urgent need to act cannot be overstated. Climate change caused by humans is already affecting our lives and livelihoods — with extreme storms, unusual floods and droughts, intense heat waves, rising seas and many changes in biological systems — as climate scientists have projected.
Although uncertainties remain, they concern issues like the rate of melting of major ice sheets rather than the broader topic of whether the climate is changing.
The biggest question is what choices we and our children should make about energy use. The more dependent we are on carbon-emitting energy sources, the more our climate will change."

What do you think – are these "alarmist" statements, or do they raise reasonable, substantiated alarm?

*edit @ DrM* "easily aggravated, especially by nonsense"
Maybe if you stop spouting nonsense you won’t be so aggravated.
CO2 expeller, would you care to attempt to defend this factually incorrect statement?
"about 50% of the CO2 increase is nonman-made"
Expeller – I don’t see where you got 85.2% from that rather random link, and Trevor most certainly has never said that only 59% of the CO2 increase is anthropogenic. It’s approximately 100%.
Entirely reasonable. It is correct to be alarmed by things that are alarming. Alarmists are those who raise alarms without basis or to a higher degree than is warranted by the evidence.
