  • Didn’t Republican President Eisenhower try to warn us of Big Business tyranny way back in 1961?

Posted by admin on April 14th, 2011 and filed under livelihood development | 8 Comments »

President of the United States (and former General of the Army) Dwight D. Eisenhower

(Farewell Address to the Nation on January 17, 1961)

"A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction…
This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. [PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO WHAT HE SAYS IN THIS NEXT PART, AND DOESN'T IT APPLY TO BIG BUSINESS?] In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."

Do we have ‘an alert and knowledgeable citizenry’ today? Is that what Ike thought would save us? Was he naive about the media or has the media become much worse since them?
Was he naive about the media or has the media become much worse since then?

He’s specifically warning the American people about the military-industrial complex. Your interpretation that he’s talking about big business in general is too broad.

Did President Eisenhower try to warn us of Big Business tyranny way back in 1961?

Pay special attention to what he says in this part:

Do we have "an alert and knowledgeable citizenry"?

Yes Ike is probably spinning in his grave that his party has become the partners of the military-industrial complex!Republicans of that era would be appalled at the way the Republican party has betrayed America by ignoring Bush’s dereliction of duty prior to 9/11/2001!

We demand that the State shall make it its primary duty to provide a livelihood for its citizens.

All citizens shall have equal rights and duties

The activities of the individual must not clash with the general interest, but must proceed within the framework of the community and be for the general good.

We demand the nationalization of all businesses which have been formed into corporations (trusts)

We demand profit-sharing in large industrial enterprises.

We demand the extensive development of insurance for old age.

We demand the creation and maintenance of a healthy middle class

We demand a land reform suitable to our national requirements, the passing of a law for the expropriation of land for communal purposes without compensation

The State must consider a thorough reconstruction of our national system of education (with the aim of opening up to every able and hard-working ……. the possibility of higher education and of thus obtaining advancement)…..
We demand the education of gifted children of poor parents, whatever their class or occupation, at the expense of the State.

The State must ensure that the nation’s health standards are raised by protecting mothers and infants, by prohibiting child labor, by promoting physical strength through legislation….

We demand freedom for all religious denominations in the State, provided they do not threaten its existence not offend the moral feelings….
    Edit: forgot 1 more:

To put the whole of this program into effect, we demand the creation of a strong central state power

Very good, you identified the source correctly, but you did not answer my question…
Does it sound conservative or liberal?

Sounds Fascist or National Socialist to me is that the Nazi platform, or maybe Hugo Chavez’s Christmas list?

Is this, what Illiberals want for this country?

    THE COMMON INTEREST BEFORE SELF-INTEREST

We demand that the State shall make it its primary duty to provide a livelihood for its citizens.

All citizens shall have equal rights and duties.

It must be the first duty of every citizen to perform physical or mental work. The activities of the individual must not clash with the general interest, but must proceed within the framework of the community and be for the general good.

    We demand therefore:

The abolition of incomes unearned by work.

The breaking of the slavery of interest

In view of the enormous sacrifices of life and property demanded of a nation by any war, personal enrichment from war must be regarded as a crime against the nation. We demand therefore the ruthless confiscation of all war profits.

We demand profit-sharing in large industrial enterprises.

We demand the extensive development of insurance for old age.

We demand the creation and maintenance of a healthy middle class.

We demand the education of gifted children of poor parents, whatever their class or occupation, at the expense of the State.

The State must ensure that the nation’s health standards are raised by protecting mothers and infants, by prohibiting child labor

We demand the abolition of the mercenary army and the foundation of a people’s army.

Is any of the above NOT on the list of the Illiberals’ agenda to shape ours into a "better" society?
Oh, T.K. is too clever — my secret is out:

    http://hitler.org/writings/programme/

No, I don’t imply, Illiberals are NAZIs… Just that their wonderful intentions have been tried before — and led to mass-murder and disaster.

Forgive me here, but I see a question followed by a list of demands that look suspiciously like those of a communist warlord like mao zedong. Is the top part your question? Are you talking about the US? To answer that bottom part, the Illiberals, as you call them want to shape the US into another communist russia. They all worship madmen like joseph stalin and ernesto "che" guevara who murdered anyone who dared question their authority. Anyone who wears the so called iconic che guevara t-shirts is a commie punk who probably doesn’t even know how dumb they look or even who the idiot on the shirt is. Even if they do, they don’t know what he REALLY did.

Would Jaya’s minority appeasement announcements, more than development focus on election eve, help Tamilnadu?

Posted by admin on March 29th, 2011 and filed under livelihood development | 4 Comments »

Tamilnadu is poised for facing the elections for the Assembly about May 2011. The opposition leader Jayalalitha had promised to fulfill the desires of the christians in her Kanyakumari meeting. She may follow up with more promises to the muslims also, perhaps to more communities who may approach her for any promise, because this is the time to extract promises from major parties!

But the question is, would the declaration of schemes like funding a trip to Palestine for christians like the Haj pilgrims funded by govt for muslims, help the state in a big way, when we have more daunting problems like the unsettled inter state riparian issues threatening the livelihood of farmers in millions or the poor power supplies that threatens to tell on industrial productions?

Rising costs of essentials, high corruptions in govt and exploitation in trade sector are driving the poor people to the limit of tolerance! Unemployment rates hiking, law and order issues increasing exponentially, etc have also much unsettled the average citizens! They are desperately looking for a party that would give the good governance, by optimal use of resources without waste of the revenue in sops to communities of sorts, dissipating the govt revenues for sops to film makers, while fleecing people for more price on petro products etc!

What are your thoughts on the so called practical administrator Ms Jaya’s announcements being made on election eve? Is she also failing to give right focus to the burning issues of people, in line with the DMK?

It will not work in a big way.Now people are aware of burning problems they are facing and definitely they may seek a change in electing their representatives to Assembly. But they have limited choices only.Either of the two,D M K or A D M K .If they weigh it correctly, the choice will fall on D M K in spite of corruption, inefficiency and family affiliation due to it s populous schemes, proper distribution of essential good through ration shops, and alliance with almost every major and minor political parties even though A D M K may get more percentage of votes.

Is "development" and "modernisation" at the cost of faith & culture, worth it?

When life imitates fiction, shouldn’t the world stop to think?

The government’s decision to stop the mining is being described as the victory of the tribals fighting to save the Niyamgiri Hills from slipping into the hands of a "cash-hungry corporate". The Orissa tribals and Cameron’s Na’vi are both pitted against powerful big business interests who want to exploit the mineral wealth in the land which they venerate. In the case of the Dongria Kondhs, the hills where the mining was planned is both sacred and a source of livelihood-just like the ‘Tree of Souls’ in Avatar.

As would be expected, the Dongria Kondhs live in easy communion with nature.

Activists and government sources have pointed to ethical issues and the huge human cost of going ahead with the plans put forth by Vedanta, a UK-based FTSE-listed company. Vedanta Resources sank 5.69 per cent on the London Stock Exchange in early trade after the Niyamgiri project was rejected by the environment ministry.

Niyamgiri is the source of two major rivers, the Vansdhara and Nagvalli that provide water for irrigation in the plains below. It is a storehouse of rare flora and fauna-the four-horned antelope and the golden gecko being among them.

The hills provide food for the tribals. Fruits that grow there are sold in village markets. In short, the Niyamgiri Hills, the home of Niyam Raja, are at the centre of Dongria Kondh culture.

This had also been prompted by the efforts the British charity Survival, which took up their cause. In fact, Survival put out an advertisement in the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair as an appeal to Cameron saying ‘Avatar is fantasy and real’. The advertisement went on to describe the Dongria Kondh case saying the tribals were "struggling to defend their land against a mining company hellbent on destroying their sacred mountain. Please help the Dongria."

Do you know about Lantana furniture? Whether it will help to reduce lantana?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under livelihood development | 2 Comments »

    LANTANA FURNITURE

Lantana camara is a highly invasive plant just like parthenium. After being brought into India from South America as an ornamental and hedge plant about 2 centuries ago, now it has become so widespread as to threaten most of our wildlife habitat and making our forests inhospitable for native flora and fauna. This weed besides being inedible for the herbivores, also grows so thick and dense that the herbivores do not prefer to live in areas dominated by lantana. As such our already dwindling forest cover is further reduced by this pugnacious weed. Despite many efforts to eradicate, this weed still persists and pervades.

In this scenario, some tribal communities have started making furnitures from lantana. These furnitures resemble cane furniture in design and performance but only cost almost half the price. By making furnitures from lantana, these tribals besides making a livelihood for them, clear our forests of lantana. Another benefit is felling of other trees for furniture is prevented.

One such tribal community from Chembakolly village near Gudalur has formed an Eco Development Committee to make furnitures from lantana collected from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. Around 16 families are now dependent on this venture. However, they are facing difficulty marketing their products at present and requested our help in this regard. Mohanraj and Thenmurugakani visited Chembakolly village and had a first hand experience of the way the lantana is made into furniture by these tribals.

We hope to place a trial order shortly and display these furnitures in this month’s EnviroMeet.

In this regard, we welcome your ideas in helping these tribals market their lantana furniture.

    Together, we can effect change.

I’m having trouble with the length of my paper, What else can I add?

Posted by admin on November 22nd, 2009 and filed under livelihood development | 1 Comment »

The instructions for the first 1/3 of the paper is this: "A. You will go to standard online references such as the United Nations Economic and Social
Development site (http://www.un.org/esa/) and the Central Intelligence Agency’s World
    Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/) to gather background
information on the economy and social structure of this country. (approx. 1/3 of the paper) "

My research paper is titled "Climate Change’s Impacts on the Bangladeshi People". The first part of my paper isn’t quite 1/3 of the paper, I’d be happy with just one page. I don’t know what else to add with the above requirememnts for this first part to make it longer. Here’s what I have so far:
"Bangladesh is situated in Southern Asia between Burma and India. It is a relatively young country who gained independence from West Pakistan in 1971 and its people are still struggling to build the country. It borders the Bay of Bengal and is on deltas of many large rivers. It is tropical with a normal 30-70% of the country flooded each year during the monsoon season. The population is greatly at risk from natural disasters as the country is densely populated with a estimated 156 million people in 144,000 sq km. Comparatively, the country is a little smaller than Iowa. This high population density increases the people’s vulnerability to climate change because the opportunity for migration within Bangladesh is limited. Since much of the population lives in poverty, the average life expectancy is 60 years. They face droughts, cyclones, waterborne diseases, deforestation, coastal erosion, back water effect, malaria, rabies and avian influenza. Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to the affects of global climate change because it is mostly flat and low-lying and has low economic development. Its economy depends on agriculture and natural resources that are greatly put at risk by natural disasters. 45% of the population is estimated to be below the poverty line and that percentage will only increase as flooding and severe weather continue to threaten the country’s major industries. The farming community produces tea, sugar, rice, potatoes, tobacco, spices and fruit. Many farming family’s livelihoods are at risk and many are all ready suffering."

Right now I’m just worried about content, not grammar or citations yet. I’d appreciate it if someone could give me a few ideas on how to lengthen this first part. Thanks in advance!!!! :)

I have answered a similar question a while ago, and I would like to repeat the same here for the benefit of other users who may answer. I am also starring this question so that my Contacts may be able to contribute, if they can manage time.

Hi I’m from Bangladesh. I wish I could have contributed in your research paper on "Climate Change’s Impacts on the Bangladeshi People".

All I can recall is that there were clearly ‘felt’ seasons in the past, like Winter (Dec-Feb), Summer (Mar-May), Monsoon (Jun-Sep) and Autumn (Oct-Nov). In these days of post-climate times the seasons seem to have overlapped a bit. We can see raining during winter times and also floods occurring at ‘odd-times’ or at regular basis, instead of some decade long spacings (frequency) of the past.

I got the following from Internet search:

    1. In recent times climate change is resulting in gradual sea level rise, repetitive disasters such as cyclone, flood, land slide, river erosion are also increasing. Now Bangladesh has floods two times a year. A data shows that- ‘over the next 40 years, 17 percent of the land will be lost to the sea resulting 20 million climate refugees because of climate change’. With a very high density of river systems, large parts of Bangladesh remain submerged during five months of monsoon so that millions of people living in river basins lack basic facilities since development have been concentrated around paved roads. Issues like this need local solution by the local people. So inspired by the lifestyle of the Bede community we realized that the rivers do not have to be barriers to development rather they can be communication channels where services will be taken to the people by boats. So an attempt was made to transform the waterways into path ways for education, information and technology and in the process adopt and mitigate climate changes. We believe that it is possible to deal with this climate change, and at the same time, to lift people out of poverty. Thus in the macro level we hope to initiate sustainable water way development which will be adaptive to the present climate crisis.

    2. Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha realized that the rivers do not have to be barriers to information, they can be communication channels. Shidhulai is working to improve quality of life in flood prone areas by taking services to the people by boats.

Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha, a non-profit organization, is working to improve quality of life in northern Bangladesh watersheds by taking services to the people by boats. These services include children’s education, libraries, training on sustainable agriculture, healthcare, adaptation strategies for climate change, waste management, computer education and Internet access.

Through the work of Shidhulai 88,000 families of hundreds of riverside villages are benefiting from improved education, sustainable agricultural practices, increased income, clean solar-powered lighting and communication with the outside world.

    Hope above helps.
